Installing deSide
On this page you will find instructions on how to install the deSide Updater, and the deSide Client.
Preparation:
There are a number of things that you will need to make sure you have already completed before beginning the actual installation of deSide. They are outlined below.
-
Create your gr-ID
account
If you do not already have a GR-ID, then you will need to create a new GR-ID for either yourself or your company. A GR-ID is your account in our system, and it is this plus your password that you must supply in order to access your licences. You can create a new GR-ID at our secure site, which is also where you can order our products, and manage the licences that you already have. -
Check the Licence Conditions
Familiarise yourself with the Licence Conditions of deSide. These conditions are the same regardless of whether you are using a Trial or a Normal licence, and you may wish to save or print a copy for your records. -
Order Your Licence Package
If you are planning on trialling deSide, please proceed to Step 4. Otherwise, log onto the secure site, using your GR-ID and password (from Step 1). On the Product Catalogue page, click on the "Order a New Licence" link in the deSide section. Select however many copies of the deSide Packages that you want, then click on the "Checkout" button. Follow the prompts until the order is completed. Make sure you print a copy of your invoice for your records. -
Download the Installation Files
Head over to the Downloads page, and download the install files for for the deSide Database Installer, the deSide Updater Installer and the deSide Client Installer. With these 3 files, you can install deSide onto your machine of choice. -
Locate your SQL Server
Make sure that you have access to an SQL Server database of some sort (either SQL Server 2000, 2005 or MSDE, all are fine). If you do not have access to any of these, you will need to install MSDE. You will need to note down an account on this SQL Server with sufficient access privileges, for use during the database install. -
Check your Permissions
Locate someone with Administrative privileges for the machine that you want to install deSide on. You will need to be logged on as a person with Admin access in order to install deSide successfully.
The deSide Updater:
Installing the deSide Updater is quite a complex process. You should make sure that you have all the information that the Preparation section detailed, as well as a System Administrator or IT person present (if you think you will need their help). Please follow these steps to set up your copy of the deSide Updater.

Installing the deSide Databases
Unzip the contents of the "Install_The_deSideDatabases_vX.X.X.zip" file to a local drive (typically your C drive), the X's in the file name will be replaced with some numbers for the version of deSide that you are installing (something like 2.3.2). In this directory you will find a "DatabaseInstaller.exe" file, double-click on this file to run it. You will see the following interface:
Using this interface, place a check mark next to the databases you want to install, taking careful note of the description of each one (displayed on the right), as you select them. A typical installation on an MSDE system is deSide Database Installer (MSDE Only) and Load Profiles Database Installer. Once you have selected the relevent databases, click on the Create Script Destination button in the lower right hand corner. You will see the following:
It is on this screen that enter the details to connect to the SQL Server you located in Preparation - Step 4. Make sure to click Test Settings before you click the OK button, just to be safe. Once you have set a valid Script Destination, click on the Go button, and the database will install (it will show a few progress bars, then finish up). If you see any errors, please contact us using our Support Page. -
Installing the deSide Updater
Double-click on the "Install_The_deSideUpdater_vX.X.X.zip" to begin. Simply follow the prompts, supplying information as the installer requests it. Once the application has installed, run it using either the shortcut on your desktop, or the one under Start -> Programs -> global-roam -> deSide Update Service -> deSide Update Service. You will see the following interface:

Continue clicking the Next button until your licence is activated. Once you have completed the licence setup, the following window will popup:
This is where you enter any special Proxy settings that your organisation requires for access to the internet. Enter the details of where you installed the deSide Database in The deSide Updater - Step 1, as well as the SQL Server Username and Password you noted down in Preparation - Step 5. Make sure to click Test Connection to ensure that the settings are valid before clicking OK. You should now see the following screen:
It is advisable at this stage to go to File -> Application -> Stop and restart the machine you are working on. If you would prefer to not restart the machine, you can also just go to File -> Service -> Start. If you did restart the machine, then as soon as it comes back online, the deSide Updater will be running as a service.
The deSide Client:
Installing the deSide Client is not as complex and involved as installing the deSide Updater. Just follow these steps to get up and running in not time at all.
